TUPIZA

La joya bella, the beautiful jewel of Bolívia, that’s how the locals call their town. One could say it’s a hidden treasure, for the charming town of Tupiza is definitely off the beaten track. With its sunny mediterranean climate, its friendly people, its folkore and the unique mountain views you get in its surroundings, Tupiza is the ideal place to get by from (or prepare for) the freezing cold nights of the nearby Salar de Uyuni (salt lakes), or to make great tours in the spectacular surroundings. Furthermore, Tupiza is an excellent place to stop for a while when you're on your way to Argentina (or vice versa). It’s also the place where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid used to hide for the law. Read what Lonely Planetsays about Tupiza at their site.

When you visit the beautiful town of Tupiza, you're welcome at

Hostal Valle Hermoso

Hostal Valle Hermoso is a friendly family hotel. Señor and señora Llanos run this place with pride and, whenever possible, their son or one of their beautiful daughters help at the reception. In the attached victualler’s shop, you can buy all kinds of drinks and icecreams. Backpackers are very welcome at Hostal Valle Hermoso. The rooms are basic, but clean and tidy. The showers provide hot running water 24 hours a day. More about the services of Hostal Valle Hermoso and how to make reservations here.

At the reception of Hostal Valle Hermoso, one can get all kinds of arrangements, renting a bicycle, horseriding are taking a jeep tour. You can also arrange for trips to the Uyuni salt lakes or to Argentina. Tickets are available at the reception. More information about things to do here.

Apart from the historical buildings and the beautiful colonial churches, Tupiza has a swimming pool, sauna, and there are discoteques and karaoke bars (those are very popular in Bolívia). If you’re lucky, there will be one of many traditional festivals. Because Tupiza is still ‘undiscovered’ by the mainstream tourist, you’ll get a chance to learn about the real Bolivian culture here. The town lies at an altitude of 2,950 m (9,680 feet), which means that the climate is very friendly. The people of Tupiza are relaxed and easy-going.

Information about Bolivia and its culture, and everything you need to know about getting there and about is to be found at the next pages.

Who am I? Find out about me and my connection with Bolívia here. Don't hesitate to ask me anything you'd like to know about Tupiza or travelling in Bolívia.

Kid - the next time I say, 'Let's go someplace like Bolivia,' let's go someplace like Bolivia.
